Title: No Help for the Heartland? The US Employment Effects of the Trump Tariffs (joint with David Autor, Anne Beck and Gordon Hanson )

Abstract: We study the impact of the 2018/2019 "Trump tariffs" and of retaliatory actions by US trade partners on employment in the United States. Local labor markets specialized in industries that were protected by US import tariffs did not enjoy a discernible rise in employment. Instead, retaliatory tariffs generated moderate job losses in agriculture and in locally supplied services, which were only partially offset by US subsidy programs that were introduced to prevent such adverse effects.
