Brigitte Hochmuth and Johannes Buggle

Brigitte Hochmuth (Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg)

Brigitte Hochmuth is joining us from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, where, as a Ph.D. student, she was supervised by Christian Merkl and Kurt Mitman (IIES Stockholm). Brigitte’s research lies at the intersection of macroeconomics, labor economics, and international economics. Her work focuses on the role of incomplete insurance in the analysis of labor market policies in open and closed economies. She also investigates how financial constraints affect labor market outcomes.

Brigitte is Austrian, enjoys a variety of sports, and is a fan of the Viennese coffeehouse culture. However, she admits that she is not a good skier.

Brigitte says: “The Department of Economics is the perfect fit for me because I see an overlap of research interests with many of the great economists there. I am excited to join the vibrant, international research environment.”

Johannes Buggle (University of Lausanne)

Johannes Buggle is joining us from the University of Lausanne. He got his PhD from Sciences Po, Paris. Johannes' primary research interest is in applied microeconomics, in particular economic history, political economy and migration. He is currently studying Jewish migration from Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Moreover, together with Stephanos Vlachos, he is investigating the effectiveness of campaign speeches in the 19th century US.

In his spare time Johannes likes going to the museum, playing the piano, listening to (classical) music, and being outdoors hiking or biking.

One reason why Johannes came to Vienna is because he really loves Manner cookies. Unfortunately, for more than 30 years he thought that they were called Wanner. Only after his arrival he discovered the truth.
