PhD Economics

The PhD programme in Economics offers training and supervision that allow students to acquire knowledge and skills necessary for a research-oriented career in economics. It caters primarily to students who plan to become professional economists at universities, research institutions, or research departments of government agencies, non-government organizations, central banks, etc. After successful completion of the PhD program in Economics students should be able to carry out independent research in theoretical, empirical, and/or applied economics.

At the moment, there are two ways to obtain a PhD in economics. There is a general program of the Department of Economics. This program now also has an admission procedure and students in the program should present and defend their research proposal in front of the doctoral advisory board.

There is also the possibility to apply for the program of the Vienna Graduate School of Economics (VGSE). VGSE is funded through a grant of the Austrian Science Foundation and in VGSE faculty members from different departments of the University of Vienna, the Institute of Advances Studies and the Vienna University of Economics and Business are collaborating. Using a highly competitive selection process, VGSE provides the best students funding. Successful applicants obtain a PhD positions at the University of Vienna.
